About the Organisation:

The Canterbury-West Coast Division of the Cancer Society of New Zealand delivers a range of inter-related activities including the funding of research and education, a wide range of fund-raising programmes and the provision of community services across health promotion, advocacy and supportive care for those affected by cancer and their whānau, all of which are enabled by a wide range of fund-raising programmes.

The Canterbury-West Coast Division is one of six throughout New Zealand. It maintains its divisional centre in Christchurch as well as community centres in Timaru, Ashburton, Rolleston, Rangiora and Greymouth.  It is aligned to The Cancer Society of New Zealand, which is a non-government organisation dependent on community support and donations.

 

About The Role: 

The incoming Chief Executive will build on the Canterbury-West Coast Division’s existing strengths and established reputation, to lead the organisation as it endeavours to further reach and ease the burden of cancer on the communities that it serves within Canterbury and the West Coast.

The Chief Executive’s purpose is to:

•           Play the key role in the development and growth of the Division, ensuring that its resources are best utilised to meet the Society’s aims of reducing the incidence of cancer and its impact on communities

•           Further action the Society’s commitment to address inequity in health outcomes

•           Ensure the work of the Society remains adjacent to, but connected with key health services for those affected by cancer

•           Achieve the long-term sustainability of the Division.

With five community centres dotted across the region, the Chief Executive has responsibility for leading a geographically diverse team, bringing people together around the mission of the organisation, and enabling the organisation to grow and make a difference for more people. Community health is the core driver of this organisation so skills in relating to and connecting with a broad range of people and organisations who work on their behalf is essential.

Reporting to the Executive Committee through the Chair, the Chief Executive will work collaboratively with leaders of other Divisions and have regard for the overall aims and objectives of the broader Cancer Society of New Zealand, to achieve a stronger and better Society nationwide.

 

Skills & Experience: 

The position requires a person with the following skills and attributes:

  • A proven ability to provide leadership and a clear sense of direction to others - a strategic mindset that can be pragmatically applied
  • A personal style that builds credibility and constructive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders from across the health and community sectors
  • Exceptional interpersonal, leadership and communication skills
  • A thought leader; practically innovative with an engaging energy and enthusiasm
  • Politically astute and authentic
  • Experience developing relationships with mana whenua and/or Māori community organisations
  • Ability to act with tact, initiative, integrity and maturity
  • Knowledge of the health and not-for-profit sectors, ideally with established networks
  • Commercial acumen, ideally with experience in business development and/or fundraising.

While you may not have worked in the sector previously it is essential that you have an understanding of, and empathy with, matters pertaining to those affected by cancer.
