Help stop the repeal of New Zealand’s lifesaving smokefree laws

Writing to your MP is a simple but powerful action you can take right now to fight the smokefree laws repeal.

Use this template as a starting point but remember to change the words to suit your voice and feelings. Letters to MPs have more power if they are written in your own words.

Subject: Stop the repeal of the Smokefree laws

Kia ora,

I am writing to ask that you stop the repeal of the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products (Smoked Tobacco) Amendment Act.

Tobacco is the deadliest consumer product of all time and still causes more than 5000 deaths every year in New Zealand. I want to see a Smokefree Aotearoa and a future free from harms caused by smoking.

Our new smokefree laws are world-leading, evidence-based, and have strong public support. More than two thirds of New Zealanders recently polled want to keep this law.

There is still time to stop the repeal, and implement our smokefree laws as planned.

Yours Sincerely,

Your Name

Tips to make your email/letter more powerful:

  • Identify yourself as a constituent by including your address. MPs are more likely to pay attention to people who might vote for them.
  • If you have a personal story about the impact of tobacco on your whānau to share, then add this in too – stories are very powerful and encourage MPs to think about the effect tobacco has on people.
  • Keep it brief, polite and concise.
  • If you’re sending a letter, handwrite it- it will stand out more.

Personal stories (like the many people harmed by tobacco or struggling with addiction) are very powerful. If you would also be prepared to share your story in the media – than we may be able to help. Email Maria on maria@cancer.org.nz to find out more.
