Cancer doesn’t stop for Christmas: gift comfort and care this holiday season

For most of us, Christmas means family, laughter and celebration. But for many Wellingtonians undergoing cancer treatment, the holidays can be a time of uncertainty and isolation.

The Cancer Society Wellington is calling on the community to support its Christmas appeal to help bring hope and comfort to those facing cancer this festive season.

“Cancer doesn’t take a holiday,” says Darryl Carpenter, Chief Executive of Cancer Society Wellington.  “Your generosity ensures that people in treatment don’t face this journey alone.”

“You’ll make a significant difference in the life of a Wellingtonian who is receiving treatment for cancer and their family. Your gift will bring them hope, joy and courage by showing that people in their community care.”

Your donation makes a real difference

Every donation is a gift that helps provide:

  • Accommodation at Margaret Stewart House – a community home for patients who don’t live near the hospital to stay while they undergo treatment at the nearby Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre
  • Support to navigate a diagnosis and treatment with access to nursing services, counselling, education and information
  • Transport to treatment through the Cancer Society’s volunteer driving service.

This Christmas, the team is keen to also allocate some of the donations towards a revamp of the outdoor garden space the community house – adding outdoor seating and more planting to revitalise what is a much-loved peaceful space for guests.

Julie, a current guest at Margaret Stewart House receiving treatment for lymphoma, says she is extremely grateful for the home-away-from-home. “Being so close to the hospital in this lovely environment keeps you going, and it’s made me feel safe to face everything that comes up.”

Why your support matters

  • 1 in 3 Wellingtonians will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.
  • Last year, the Cancer Society in Wellington provided 4778 free nights of accommodation, made 3010 trips to take patients to and from treatment, and answered 4150 calls to its free 0800 CANCER helpline where people can speak to experienced cancer nurses
  • The Cancer Society receives no government funding – it relies on the generosity of public donations to deliver its essential services.
