James (Ian) Urquhart: A Legacy of Quiet Generosity
Ian Urquhart was a man who believed in action over acclaim. A quiet yet deeply thoughtful philanthropist, Ian lived his life with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility to his community. Though he never sought the spotlight, the ripple effects of his generosity continue to be felt across Canterbury and beyond.
Born and raised in Christchurch, Ian built a successful business career through perseverance, pragmatism, and a deep respect for people from all walks of life. But it was his values, of kindness, equity, and compassion, that led him to quietly begin what would become the J I Urquhart Family Trust.
The Trust was established express purpose of supporting charitable causes—particularly in health, emergency services, and disadvantaged communities across Canterbury and the West Coast
His vision was simple but powerful: to support causes that made a real and lasting difference. Over time, the Trust became a significant source of support for community organisations, including here at the Southern Cancer Society, where his legacy is now interwoven with the care and comfort offered to thousands of individuals and whānau navigating cancer.
This garden seating area is dedicated in honour of Ian, the Urquhart family and the trustees - a space for rest, reflection, and connection. It reflects Ian’s passion for gardening and his belief that small, thoughtful gestures can offer immeasurable comfort during life’s most challenging moments.
The Cancer Society is deeply grateful for the enduring support of the J I Urquhart Family Trustees, who continue the legacy of Ian’s values.
