“Right from the start, I said I’d rather lose an arm than lose my life… my kids are everything to me, and they need their dad.”- Shaun, cancer patient
Shaun was a busy young dad when he noticed a lump.
He and his wife had two little boys - Ezra was two, and Archie had just been born. Life was full. Then came the diagnosis: a rare, aggressive sarcoma.
“You start thinking about how much time you have with your kids and with your wife... Those are the three people I thought about in that moment.”
Chemo began immediately. Radiation followed. Shaun’s body was pushed to its limits and his family’s world turned upside down.
That’s when the Cancer Society stepped in.
“Without support from the Cancer Society, it just would have been a nightmare. The transport service was a complete Godsend. They did all the scheduling, the drivers were amazing — even financially, it was a huge help.”
Then came the hardest part.
In February, Shaun had his dominant arm and part of his chest removed to save his life.
“As long as they take the cancer, I can deal with it. I knew I could learn to live with one arm.”
Now, he’s learning to navigate life again — one-handed — while raising two young boys and recovering from major surgery.
“You are going through so much – physically, financially. Having the Cancer Society there… it just made a HUGE difference”
Will you be there for the next Kiwi like Shaun?
