More than just a laundromat

Time and time again the Cancer Society is reminded of the generosity and kindness of its supporters and the community. Often, our services touch people’s lives in such a way that they want to give back to us later down the track.

Two passionate Wellingtonians, Melinda and Chris, decided to leave their corporate jobs in 2019 to help spread good throughout the greater Wellington community through their charity, Leatham Charitable Trust. Over the years they have gifted over $200,000 to local community groups such as Kapiti Youth Support, schools and other charities. After Janice, Melinda’s mum, sadly passed away from cancer, the two have recently turned to support Cancer Society Wellington through an unsuspecting business– self-service laundromats.

As Melinda’s mother was cared for by Wellington Hospital and the Cancer Society Wellington, the pair felt it was only right that their newly opened laundromat, located just up the road, support the cancer charity. Not only are Melinda and Chris donating 10% of profits from the laundromat to the Cancer Society Wellington but have recently made a very generous donation of $10,000.

“We are motivated by helping others, and supporting the Cancer Society is very personal to us, as we know it is for many other families”.

At a time when more people are facing cancer than ever before, this donation has been gratefully received and will help fund the many services that the Cancer Society Wellington offers.

“From transport to treatment, to free counselling and wrap-around support, this donation will have a real and lasting impact on the lives of those facing cancer and their families. We are incredibly grateful to Melinda and Chris for their donation and ongoing support.”, said Michael Smith, Cancer Society Wellington CEO.

Janice Laundry is a 24/7 EFTPOS self-service laundry with high-quality machines for washing and drying. It is based in Newtown, Wellington, and is the first of three laundromats that Melinda and Chris plan to open. For more information visit https://www.janicelaundry.co.nz/
