When Oamaru resident Heather Couper learned she had cancer, she knew treatment would take her away from home.
For Heather, that journey took her first to Dunedin and later to
Christchurch. In the midst of uncertainty, there was comfort: free accommodation at Daffodil House in Dunedin and the Canterbury Cancer Centre in Christchurch.
“The close proximity of Daffodil House to the hospital is amazing!” Heather says with gratitude. Just steps away
from the care she needed, Daffodil House has been a sanctuary.
Staying at both Daffodil House and the Canterbury Cancer Centre were places where Heather could connect with Cancer Society staff and find reassurance in friendly conversations.
But possibly one of the most important things to Heather was being able to have people stay with her, acting as a key support to her while she went through her cancer treatment.
Heather (64) was diagnosed in August 2025. Thanks to her GP’s quick action, treatment began swiftly. First surgery, then radiation in Dunedin and finally further radiotherapy treatment in Christchurch, where the Canterbury Cancer Centre was also a safe, welcoming place to stay.
Accommodation is not just a detail, it’s a lifeline. For people like Heather, having somewhere comfortable and fit-for-purpose eases the burden of worry and allowed her to focus on what truly matters - her health.
Heather is deeply appreciative of the care she’s received. “I’m very grateful for the support of the Cancer Society and our
healthcare system. They’ve been there for me, and that’s wonderful.”
Heather has now recovered well enough to return to her roles as
a support worker for Idea Services and a teacher aide at Waitaki
Boys’ High School, getting back to the life she loves.
