We have scholarships and grants available across the country for research and professional development.
Some Divisions of the Cancer Society fund regional research initiatives. The Wellington Division and Southern Division information and application forms are now available.

Grants available across Greater Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson-Tasman and Marlborough
The Wellington Division Medical and Scientific Committee meet three times per year to consider grants. They meet in May to consider Research Project Grants, August to consider Summer Studentship applications, and November to consider Academic Scholarships. At each of these meetings they will also consider Professional Development applications.
The Cancer Society Wellington Division provides professional development grants to assist researchers and health professionals working in the Wellington region to attend relevant conferences, seminars, or courses in Aotearoa New Zealand, or overseas.
The general aim is to help successful applicants gain experience that will improve cancer care in Wellington.
Professional Development Grants are considered three times per year. The deadlines for these applications are 30 April, 31 July and 31 October.

Each year the Cancer Society Wellington Division provides a limited number of cancer research grants to researchers based in the Wellington Region.
Grants are normally less than $30,000 each.

For 2025-26 year, the Committee has 3 Summer Studentships available for $6,000 each. Applications for these must be submitted by 31 July 2025 for Consideration in August.
Grants available across Southern Division
Grant applications must be received by email using the application form provided to: grants@southerncancer.org.nz
Grant funding would be a contribution to a PhD student’s expenses per annum for 3 years as available. Consideration will also be given to suitable smaller projects of less than $5,000 if appropriate. Grants will be made at the end of each quarter i.e. March, June, September, uand December of each year. It is contingent on applicants received and funds available. Note: It could take 4-5 weeks for applications to be processed. Applicants will be advised when they can expect to hear the outcome of their grant application.

Applications for grants will be assessed monthly if all requested documentation, including referees’ reports, and the researcher’s CV, are received. Grants will be made at the end of each quarter i.e. March, June, September and December of each year. It is contingent on applicants received and funds available.
